Scope: What will the classroom of the future be like? In different scientific fields and practice contexts, new theories and technologies are emerging, that might be able to help to improve teaching and learning in collaborative spaces that we call classrooms. Thus far, there is hardly any concerted multi-disciplinary effort towards designing the classroom of the future. This workshop is aimed at making a first step in that direction in bringing together researchers, designers, and teachers to share ideas on emerging theoretical and technological development related to the future classroom and plan the future classroom in an innovative and imaginative way. Contributors might address for example school and classroom architecture, furniture design, the history of school education in the classroom, classroom management, the sociology of the classroom, smart classrooms and ambient technologies, roomware and groupware architecture, open source architectures to curriculum development, instructional approaches to collaborative learning spaces. One thematic focus will be on ideas of future teachers orchestrating technology-supported processes of learning and instruction in collaborative learning space.
Location and time: The workshop will start on Wednesday 24th 2007 at 19:00 PM and will end on Friday at 12:30 AM. It will take place in Villars, Switzerland in the context of the "CSCL Alpine Rendez-Vous" (http://craftsrv1.epfl.ch/events/alpine/).
Costs: The cost per participant will be 500 CHF (about 320 euros; included registration, 2 hotel nights, full board). Also the participants themselves will be responsible their own travelling expenses.
Additional information: Our workshop participants are in addition welcome to join the Rendez-Vous day of the CSCL Alpine Rendez-Vous (from Tuesday 23rd at 18:30 till Wednesday 24th at 19:00) with a set of activities that gather participants from all workshops. The costs will be about 300 CHF (190 euros; which includes one more hotel night).
Format: The workshop will start on Wednesday 24 th 2007 at 19:00 PM and will end on Friday 26 th at 12:30 AM . A number of participants will have the chance to give a presentation during the workshop on the topic of the future classroom from his/her own perspective. Some innovative collaboration methods will be applied during the workshop to support multidisciplinary discussion and collaborative problem-solving on central issues.
Participants: The workshop will involve about 30 participants, mixing members of the CSCL SIG, invited researchers and others who are interested from relevant domains (school architecture, classroom management, roomware etc.).
Important dates: Those interested in taking part should send their preliminary notification for the participation and the contact information to the workshop coordinator. Please indicate if you are interested in presenting your own work at the workshop. In that case, submit a title and summary for a topic of the future classroom from your own perspective (approximately 800 words plus some pictures) by the 30 th of August and send it to the workshop coordinator by email (k.makitalo@iwm-kmrc.de). We will notify you if your proposal has been accepted by September 18 th .
The final registration deadline will be October 1st.
